Building Permits

This page outlines the steps involved in obtaining a Building Permit (and Occupancy Permit if required). Access to the relevant forms, checklist and fees are also provided.

Before you begin:

  • Have you determined if you need a Building Permit? If not, refer to ‘Do I need approval’ page to access the Business Self-Assessment Tool.
  • Would you like to schedule a pre application lodgement meeting (optional)?
  • If your business requires Health Approval, it is important that you discuss any health requirements prior to applying for a Building Permit and fitting out your business. Contact the Health Services Team.
Following is an overview of each of the types of approvals, permits and licenses that may be required:

Application process

You can lodge your application online or download the relevant form to complete by mail or in person at the City of Wanneroo.

You will need to provide information to support your application and assist with the assessment. Application checklists are available to ensure that you submit all required information.

Fees are applicable for most applications and will vary depending on your business type and proposal. A fee calculator is available to assist you.

Your application will be assigned to a Building Surveyor for assessment.

Note: Upon receiving the application, the Building Surveyor will do a preliminary check to ensure that all required information has been submitted. They will contact you if anything further is required.

The City of Wanneroo has 10 business days to determine a certified building application. However, we endeavour to assess applications in a timely manner and in many cases applications are determined before the required timeframes.

Once the application is approved, the building permit will be emailed to you, along with any relevant information.

A BA7 Notice of Completion must be completed and submitted it to the City of Wanneroo within seven days of completing the work. This establishes the end date of the permit for compliance and record keeping purposes.

If an occupancy permit is required, it is best to lodge this application now.

An Occupancy Permit is required before a commercial tenancy or building can be occupied.

Refer to the Occupancy Permit Information Sheet to find out more and how to apply.

Next step: Arrange final health inspection (if required)

A site inspection of your premises may need to be conducted by a City Health Officer.

An inspection by a City Health Officer usually occurs when the premises fit-out has occurred and before the final approval to operate is issued. A Health Officer can visit earlier if you need assistance ie. before the fit-out approval is issued. Contact us to arrange your inspection.
