Planning Approvals
Planning approval, often called Development Approval, is needed for most new businesses. It’s also often needed for changes to existing businesses that impact the use of land or buildings.
The City assesses the proposed use of land or buildings against relevant planning policies and regulations to ensure it is appropriate for the area. This page has information to help you obtain your Planning Approval.
Before you begin the Planning Approval process

Start your Planning Approval application
Step 1: Compile and lodge your application
You will need to provide information to support your application. Find out what’s required by referring to the Development Application checklist.
Fees apply for most applications and vary depending on your business type and proposal. Find this information with the fee calculator.
Submit your application at the City’s Civic Centre, by post, or lodge your application online.
Step 2: Provide any additional supporting documents
On receiving your application, the City’s Planning team will do a preliminary check to ensure all required information has been submitted.
You’ll be contacted if anything further is required. Your application can only progress once all required information has been received.
Step 3: Your application is formally accepted
Once you’ve provided all required information, your application is formally accepted. You will be emailed an acknowledgment letter, which will include the name of the Planner who will assess your application.
Step 4: Your application is assessed
Your application will be determined within 60 days, or up to 90 days if public consultation (advertising) is required.
The City aims to assess applications in a timely manner, and in many cases, applications are determined well before required timeframes.
Step 5: Your proposal may be referred to other officers or agencies
In some instances, your application may be referred to others for comment, including other City officers such as the Building or Health teams,
or to external agencies
Step 6: Your proposal may be advertised to public for comment
Some proposals may need to be advertised to the public for comment. City officers will let you know if your proposal must be advertised,
and if so, the City will manage the advertising process.
Step 7: Your application outcome is determined and advised
Once your application is finalised, you will be emailed a determination letter and stamped plans.
Applying for other approvals and permits
Now your planning approval is secured, you can apply for any further approvals you need, such as Building Approvals or Health Approvals

You can lodge your application online or download the relevant form to complete by mail or in person at the City of Wanneroo.
